LUMINOSITY

By: Stephanie Thomas

My name is Beatrice. When I was born, I was blessed with the Sight. I was immediately removed from my parents and enrolled in the Institution. At the age of twelve, I had my first true vision, earning my raven’s wings. And when I turned seventeen, one of my visions came true. Things haven’t been the same since.
The Institution depends on me to keep the City safe from our enemy, the Dreamcatchers, but I’m finding it harder to do while keeping a secret from everyone, including my best friend Gabe. It is a secret that could put us all in danger. A secret that could kill me and everyone close to me.
But the enemy has been coming to me in my dreams, and I think I’m falling in love with him. He says they’re coming. He says they’re angry. And I think I’ve already helped them win.

INBETWEEN (Kissed by Death, #1)

By:Tara Fuller

Coming August, 2012

Entangled Teen

*****

Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky—and unending—lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.
It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the only thing he has left…his soul.

Chapter 1

Finn

Sometimes Emma made me feel so alive, I almost forgot I was dead.

Almost.

I sank down onto the side of her bed, amazed by the blazing wildfire that swept through me whenever Emma was near enough to touch. I took a deep, unneeded breath, and settled down on my side next to her. The mattress didn’t sink. The springs didn’t groan with the weight of an extra body. The distance between us was an impossible void. Inches that might as well have been miles. Miles that left me wanting in so many ways that I ached.

Even the sun couldn’t resist her. Its glowing rays caressed her skin, and stained her hair the satiny color of summer wheat. Before I knew what was happening, my hand followed their lead. Cells ignited. My skin burned, screaming with the agonizing need to touch—

“What do you think you’re doing?”

I jerked my hand away just as Easton melted up from the polished hardwood floor beneath the window. Like an oil slick coming to life, he unfolded his long, shadowy legs until he was just an ink blot against the square of tangerine sunrise behind him. His violet eyes pinned me like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Which, I kind of was.

“Nothing,” I lied.

“Yeah, looked like nothing.” He strolled across the room accompanied by a wave of sulfur and smoke, the black serpent tattoo on his neck glinting. “What were you planning to do, recite her poem? I swear to God, if you were still alive I’d confiscate your man card.”

I ignored the barb and scrunched up my nose. “Jesus, Easton. Don’t they have a shower somewhere between here and the afterlife?”

“Screw you. You didn’t just have to tow somebody’s grandpa to Hell.” He brushed something chalky and grey off of his cloak and a shudder worked its way down my spine. God only knows who or what it belonged to. “Besides I wasn’t the one about to feel up a sleeping human.”

“I wasn’t—”

“Save it.” He waved his hand. “We have work to do. I don’t have time for your useless obsession with the human today.”

“Will you please stop calling her that?”

“What?” Easton glanced up from Emma’s vanity, where he’d been inspecting the various lotions and bottles like he was on some alien planet. Then again, Easton had been dead for something like four hundred years, so all of her stuff probably was sort of alien to him.

The human. You make me sound like a freak. It’s not like we’re a different species for God’s sake. We were humans, too, or don’t you remember that far back?”

Were. Past tense.”

We could have gone back and forth like that for hours, but the call came. It always did. It started in my bones—a cold so cutting that it sliced through me like a machete. When I looked up, Easton’s jaw was clenched, his muscles taut and ready. He slowly closed his hand around the handle of his scythe that burned black and softly smoked at his side. I flexed my fingers as the icy ribbons of death worked their way through each one of my limbs.

“Can you take this one for me?” I asked. “You’re already going to be there, and I just got back—”

“No,” Easton said. “Hell no. I have my own job to do. I can’t keep covering for your sorry ass. Besides, you’re already on thin ice with Balthazar. Don’t push your luck, Finn. Just keep your nose down, collect your souls, and thank the Almighty that you don’t have my job. Now let’s go.”

“Yeah, but…” My eyes returned to Emma. Sleeping. Perfect. Safe.

“For the love of God. She’ll be fine, you pansy.” Easton clamped a hand over my shoulder and dragged me from the bed.

“How do you know?”

He shrugged. “I don’t.”

With that he vanished, consumed in a flash by the keening wails of the damned. The screams beckoned. Clawed at me from the inside out.

Rule one as a seeker: Death doesn’t wait for anyone.

And it sure as hell wasn’t waiting for me now.

In the future, only one rule will matter:
Don’t. Ever. Peek.
Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed – arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.
Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention.  She¹s a military legacy who¹s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know – especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Cookie Friday! ~Pudding Chip Cookies with Emma and Cash from INBETWEEN~ February 10, 2012

Tags: , , , ,

As you might know I love to bake. Wait, let me rephrase that so that it’s closer to the truth. I love to eat cookies. Therefore I bake to feed my addiction, in-between the moments that my sister-in-law is not supplying me with cupcakes and other sweets of the delicious variety. It’s actually something that Emma, one of the main characters in my upcoming YA novel INBETWEEN, loves too. She is definitely a baker, and a good one at that. One of the hazards of her having the gift of yum though, is it attracts moochers. Like her best friend Cash who tends to hover when he smells something cooking next door. So, with that in mind, I’d like to introduce Emma and Cash. She’s promised to cook us up a new cookie recipe and Cash…well, Emma why is Cash here again?

“He’s here to be unhelpful and get in my way,” she says, slapping Cash’s hand when he reaches for a bowl of chocolate chips.

“Hey, I’m here to test the finished product,” he says. “What good’s a cook without someone to eat it. I’m the most important part of this process.”

Emma rolls her eyes and pulls her hair up into a bun. “Whatever you say.”

So, Emma, how about a list of ingredients to get us started. What does everybody reading at home need to bake with us?

“Okay, first of all you need 2 cups of mini semi sweet chocolate chips.”

“Make that more like… one and halfish cups of chocolate chips Em, ” Cash says, swallowing.

“Cash! Stop eating the ingredients!”

“Don’t act like you don’t have enough of this crap in your pantry to last you through a zombie apocalypse,” he says.

“Fine, go get that other bag.” Emma waves Cash off and tucks a strand of blonde hair behind her ear and sighs. “Ingredients. Okay. You also need the following…

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 package instant vanilla pudding

1 stick margarine or butter softened (I like margarine)

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 large egg

1 large egg white

And…” Emma trails off and smiles at Cash when he tosses her a bag of chocolate chips. “And two cups mini chocolate chips.”

“See.” Cash grins and raises his pierced brow. “I’m helpful.”

Okay guys, what’s next?

Emma pulls out two mixing bowls and blows the hair out of her eyes.

“First you need to mix the flour and pudding mix in a separate small bowl. Then beat the butter in a large mixing bowl on med-high speed for like 30 seconds,” Emma says.

Cash laughs and Emma glares at him as she mixes the butter. “Don’t say it. I don’t even want to know why you think that’s funny.”

He shrugs and pops another chocolate chip into his mouth.

“Okay, now you want to beat in the brown sugar and baking soda into the butter until it’s all mixed,” she says. “Now, beat in the egg and egg white.” She stops to mix everything together.

“Now, gradually mix in the flour mixture until it’s well blended.” Cash tips the flour mix into the bowl while Emma mixes. When they’re done he grins.

“See, what would you do without me?” He asks, wiping the flour on his palms onto the front of his green t-shirt that says Kiss Me. I’m pretending to be Irish.

Emma rolls her eyes and grins, flicking more flour onto him.

“After that all you need to do is gently stir in the chocolate chips with a spoon,” she says.

“How long till their done?” Cash asks, holding his hand out. “Here let me put them on the pan.”

“Trust you with a bowl full of cookie dough?” Emma laughs. “Do I look stupid?”

“You have flour on your nose.” Cash grins and leans on the counter. “Do you really want me to answer that?”

Anyway, now you just drop the dough in rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet and cook at 350 for about 10 minutes. Cool and eat!”

Awesome! Sounds easy enough. I guess we can go ahead and get out this batch we baked earlier before Cash has a panick attack.

Emma laughs. “I think we better. How about we post a pic to show everyone how they turned out?”

Pudding Chip Cookies!

So Cash, how do they taste?

He shoves his second cookie into his mouth and gives two thumbs up. “Hot. Just like I like my women.”

“Really?” Emma asks laughing. “I swear your jokes get worse everyday.”

“Then why are you laughing?” He waggles his eye brows.

I guess that means they’re good! How about you Emma? What do you rate them?

She swallows a bite and grins. “I give them 4 out of 5 scythes.”

Cash chokes. “Scythes? You choose scythes as your rating method? Shouldn’t you use whisks or stars or something not related to death?”

“Finn’s idea.” Emma shrugs. ”Reaper humor. He thought it would be funny.”

“You’re boyfriend has a sick sense of humor,” Cash says.

Okay, well that’s our cookie recipe for the week! Hope you guys enjoy them as much as we are! Have a great weekend!

Throwback Thursday: When I Desperately Wanted to be a Poet February 8, 2012

When I was a teenager I desperately wanted to be a poet. Back when I had my heart-broken for the first time by a boy. And I said things like “I’ll never love anybody again!” and “You’ll never understand me!”. This was also the very tragic time is my life when I used the word dude quite often. Usually in reference to my Dad when he did something I objected to. Back when my world consisted of books, boys and my best friend and I was an honest to God roller skating car hop. This was also the time when I tore down my coveted Leonardo DiCaprio posters and painted my walls black.  When I would listen to Glycerine by Bush over and over like it had some significant meaning in my life. I would sit outside on my back porch and stare at the sky and try to imagine what life might be like in a city. A place that was lit up at night by more than the moon and lightning bugs and the crappy orange security light in my parents yard. It’s when I learned to write poems about more than icy Oklahoma winters and dusty country sunsets. It’s when I learned to channel what I was feeling into words. It’s when I learned to string those words together like popcorn on fishing twine and turn them into a story.

I mention all of this because I came across some of my old journals. They’re special to me, because for better or worse it’s where it all started. So in honor of my misguided younger years I’m posting one of my very early works. A poem from one of my journals. I’m sure I wrote it on my back porch smelling Mom’s pot roast simmer inside, wishing I could be anywhere but there. Funny how I’d give anything to go back there again.

Weeping Willow

Just outside our empty home,

The weeping willow stands alone.

It hangs its limbs so limp and frail,

Shading every board and nail.

Casting out dark shadow shapes,

That seep in through the parted drapes.

The weeping willow sways and sighs,

Hiding secrets, pain and lies.

Outside each pretty window frame,

It’s lush leaves hide a house of shame.

The brittle branches twist and fly,

Guarding us from passers-by.

For through these doors and deep within,

The willow knows the dark and sin.
