Waiting on Wednesday: Before I Wake January 25, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tara Fuller @ 8:37 PM

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating. This week I’m spotlighting a book that I have to wait five whole months for still! Grrr.. To say that Rachel Vincent blew my mind in the last Soul Screamers book would be an understatement. Things happened that I am still having a hard time processing. And while she may have thrown me for a loop, it only made me crave the next installment in the series more. I can’t wait to see what happens with Kaylee, Nash, and Tod.

Six Sentence Sunday: INBETWEEN January 23, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tara Fuller @ 1:07 AM

For my first Six Sentence Sunday I ‘m going to post six sentences from the project closest to my heart. INBETWEEN! For now this is your only peek until August so enjoy! :) Here is a little from my favorite reaper Finn.

Sometimes Emma made me feel so alive I could almost forget that I was dead. Almost. I sank down to perch on the side of her bed to watch her sleep amazed by the blazing warmth that was sweeping through me like wildfire. Scorching the places where veins used to run. Melting the hollow place where a heart used to beat. I took a deep unneeded breath and settled down beside her.

“Waiting On” Wednesday: The Darkest Seduction January 18, 2012

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating. And this week I am spotlighting a book that can’t get here fast enough. I am a huge fan of the Lords of the Underworld series and also just Gena Showalter in general. When it comes to paranormal romance, this is one author who does it right every time. Each book is better than the last. And I along with all of the other Gena Showalter fans out there have been waiting a very long time for the sexy Paris’s story. Can’t wait to read this one and it come’s out in February! Happy Birthday to me! :)

THE DARKEST SEDUCTION by: Gena Showalter

Possessed by the demon of Promiscuity, immortal warrior Paris is irresistibly seductive—but his potent allure comes at a terrible price.  Every night he must bed someone new, or weaken and die.  And the woman he craves above all others is the one woman he’d thought was forever beyond his reach…until now.   Newly possessed by the demon of Wrath, Sienna Blackstone is racked by a ruthless need to punish those around her. Yet, in Paris’s arms the vulnerable beauty finds soul-searing passion and incredible peace. Until a blood feud between ancient enemies heats up. Will the battle against gods, angels and creatures of the night bind them eternally– or tear them apart?

Most Anticipated Books for 2012 January 14, 2012

In the fashion of one of my favorite books and movies, I’m going to do this list High Fidelity style and let you in on the top five books I am most excited to read in 2012.

#1) FEVER by: Lauren DeStefano

Okay, this must be the year for dystopian because I’ll admit that three of the five books on my list are just that. If you read the first book in this series WITHERED you know why this book is on my list. In my eyes Lauren DeStefano pushed the boundaries of young adult literature with this idea and I love her for it. Withered was heartbreaking, beautiful and in no way did the author walk over egg shells for the reader. Withered is a dystopian with a sister wives twist that I can only describe as genius. I am jumping out of my skin for the next installment in this series.

#2) INSURGENT by: Veronica Roth

Next up on the list is also the second book in a dystopian series. I actually just read Divergent at the end of 2011 but I finished it in one night. I loved it.Divergent had me on the edge of my seat, my heart in my throat, and tears in my eyes. I could not get over how perfectly plotted it was. How vivid the world was. How attached to the characters I got. And if an amazing story isn’t enough to make me want to read the next book in this series I have one word that is enough. Four. The most swoon worthy male lead I have read in a very long time. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Four and Tris next.

#3) GRAVITY by: Melissa West

By this point you can see that I love dystopian. But this is one I am going nuts waiting to read! This is        the first for debut author Melissa West and is sure to make waves in the young adult community. Here         is the blurb for this hot new YA read.

In the future, only one rule will matter: Don’t. Ever. Peek.
Seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander just broke that rule and saw the last person she expected hovering above her bed–arrogant Jackson Locke, the most popular boy in her school. She expects instant execution or some kind of freak alien punishment, but instead, Jackson issues a challenge: help him, or everyone on Earth will die.
Ari knows she should report him, but everything about Jackson makes her question what she’s been taught about his kind. And against her instincts, she’s falling for him. But Ari isn’t just any girl, and Jackson wants more than her attention. She’s a military legacy who’s been trained by her father and exposed to war strategies and societal information no one can know–especially an alien spy, like Jackson. Giving Jackson the information he needs will betray her father and her country, but keeping silent will start a war.

#4) LOTHAIR by Kresley Cole

Okay this one is sort of a cheat. This was on my list for most anticipated books for 2012 but I’ve already read it since it was released in January. But I can’t leave it off of the list. It’s too good. As a HUGE Kresley Cole fan I have been salivating over this book for months. Anyone who reads the Immortals After Dark series had to have been too, because we were finally going to get a look at the infamous Lothair. The most evil vampire in all the Lore. And let me tell you this book did not disappoint. The longest of all ten books I still managed to devour it in two nights flat. Can’t wait for the next installment in this series!

#5) MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY by: Rachel Harris

If you know me than you know I am sucker for time travel and romance. Lucky me this book has both!         And to top it all off it’s set in Italy! One of my favorite places in the world. When I read the blurb to this

upcoming hot young adult novel I was hooked. Here’s the blurb.

On the precipice of her sixteenth birthday, the last thing lone wolf Cat Crawford wants is an extravagant gala thrown by her bubbly stepmother and well-meaning father. So even though Cat knows the family’s trip to Florence, Italy, is a peace offering, she embraces the magical city and all it offers. But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy tent, she exits . . . right into Renaissance Firenze.
Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore.
Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever?

So there you have it! A peek at the books that I am dying to get on my bookshelf in 2012. What books are you waiting for this year?

The Art of Showing vs. Telling December 30, 2011

Filed under: Writing — Tara Fuller @ 2:11 AM

One of the most valuable things I’ve learned as a writer is the “show instead of tell” rule. A lot of writers break this rule and don’t even realize that they’re doing it. They tell us what’s happening instead of showing us. A good example of the two would be this:

1.)    Telling: Zoe was nervous. She couldn’t understand why Brad hadn’t called. Had he found out about Scott? It had only been a onetime thing, but it didn’t stop her from feeling guilty, and now terrified that her boyfriend would find out.

2.)    Showing: Zoe shuffled the papers on her desk and checked the clock on the wall for the hundredth time. She clicked her pen to the beat of the seconds ticking by. Brad always hated it when she did that.

“Why hasn’t he called yet?” She asked the quiet room around her threatening to swallow  her whole. She chewed on her bottom lip until it was sore staring at the silent phone. He knew. He had to know. Unable to stand it another minute, she grabbed the little silver phone and punched in Scott’s number. She didn’t even give him time to say hello.

“You told him, didn’t you?”

What’s the difference between the two? The first is just telling the reader about the event happening. The second is more of an immediate scene. There’s action. Dialogue. We don’t just hear about how Zoe is nervous. We feel it with her as each tick of the clock passes. The tension is clear.

Showing through dialogue and action is always better than a long exhausting narrative. Give the reader just enough of the setting to get the idea and let their imagination do the rest. There is a lot to be said for good dialogue. If done right it can set the tension in the scene and relay any important information that you might be tempted to relay through exposition. It’s also a great way to keep the reader engaged.

If all else fails always remember this one simple rule: R.U.E. = Resist the Urge to Explain

Meet Alex from PERIGEE MOON! December 20, 2011

Tags: , , ,

With the exciting release of PERIGEE MOON  coming up next month (which I am all *squee!* about) I thought I would introduce you to one of the main characters. Alex is somebody that is very special to my heart. We spent a lot of time together getting his and Rowan’s story ready for the world to see. He is sweet, mysterious, a little wounded, and has a slight temper when it comes to people messing with the girl he loves. And did I mention totally swoon worthy with a hot British accent? ;)

So here is how it’s going to go. I’ll post a pic (sort of my celebrity casting for Alex) and a short journal entry of Alex’s from the book. Enjoy! (And don’t forget to enter the PERIGEE MOON book trailer contest!) :)

Something changed today. I can feel it in my bones; the same quiet fear that shook me in the moments before they came, torches blazing, to take mother away. The winds have shifted. The Goddess is at my door. And I find myself filled with fear for the unknown. To make matters worse I dreamt of her again, this beautiful creature whose name I fear I will never know. I awoke this morning, her face still fresh in my mind and somehow I knew that life as I knew it would never be the same. ~ Alexander 1692
